Mestre Artur Emidio

Master Artur Emidio at 70 years old is a living legend in capoeira. He was a student of Master Paizinho another legend from the region of Ilheus and Itabuna. Master Artur Emidio established himself in Rio de Janeiro where he helped to introduce Capoiera with great success. He is considered by many to be the Master of Master in Rio de Janeiro, and he was chosen as the Godfather of the Rio Community Capoeira Project.

Master Suassuna

Master Suassuna is one of the most widely repsected capoeira masters alive today. Master Suassuna was a pupil of Master Bimba and a pioneer in bringing capoeira from Bahia to Sao Paulo, the largest metropolis in Brazil. The presence of capoeira in Sao Paulo helped to expose capoeira to world. His group, Cordao de Ouro was founded in 1967.

Master Nestor Capoeira

Master Nestor Capoeira was iniciated by Master Leopoldina, graduated from the Senzala Group under Master Preguica in 1969. One of the pioneers in taking capoeira abroad, he has given lessons throughout the years in numerous countries around the world.
Master Nestor Capoeira is also one of the most well known authors of capoeira books, including The Little Capoeira Book, one of the few capoeira books written in English. He has been teaching capoeira in Europe since 1971 and presently teaches at Odenese University in Denmark.

Master Lua

Master Lua is from Salvador. He began practicing capoeira with Master Bimba and later spent time training with Master Canjiquinha. A great artesan specializing in atabaques, he builds them and plays them like no one else. In addition, the capoeira he plays is vigorous and full of tricks.
Master Lua was pioneer in teaching capoeira abroad and he created a group in Europe called "Oke-Arou", primarily concerned with with the roots of capoeira. He is also a founding member of the Brazilian Association of Capoeira Angola.

Master Boa Gente

Master Boa Gente became a master with Master Gato and is very well known in Vale das Pedrinhas, a neighborhood on the outskirts of Salvador, where his is one of the leaders of the community. He is one of the primary teachers of Capoeira Angola and a member of the Brazilian Association of Capoeira Angola (ABCA), the most important institution of Capoeira Angola in Brazil.
Master Boa Gente administers the classes at school, at his academy the Master Boa Association of Capoeira and also in the street. On top of all this, he is also in charge of a community radio station.

Master Bola Sete

Master Bola Sete, began practicing capoeira under the direction of Master Pessoa Ba-Ba-Ba, a black man from Marinha Mercante for whom the fight was undeniable linked to magic. He later trained with Master Bobo.
Master Bola Sete is the author of a good book about capoeira (written in Portuguese) called: "A Capoeira Angola na Bahia". He is also an active member in the Brasilian Association of Capoeira Angola (ABCA), the most important representative group of capoeira angola from Bahia.

Master Boneco

Master Boneco began his martial arts training at a very young age in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He practiced with the Capoeira Group Senzala for 15 years in Rio de Janeiro before receiving his black belt from the most reputable masters in Brazil. Master Boneco has also studied Physical Education at Gama Filho University of Rio de Janeiro.
Master Boneco is a world recognized authority on Capoeira and has taught classes at Yale University, UCLA, academies in New York, Chicago, Amsterdam, Munich, Paris, Nagasaki, Sidney and more. In 1998 Master Boneco moved from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Los Angeles, California and currently teaches at a number of locations.

Master Camisa

Master Camisa, was born in 1956 in Jacobina, Bahia. He began capoeira in the 1960's and in later Salvador, he participated in the rodas of Waldemar and Traira. In 1970, he became a student of Mestre Bimba.
In 1972, Master Camisa moved to Rio de Janeiro and joined the Senzala Capoeira Group. In 1988, he founded The Brazilian Associateion of Support and Involvement with Capoeira, the Abada Capoeira Group one of the largest and most wide-spread group in the world.

Master Cigana

Master Cigana is the first female capoeira master. She was born in Rio de Janeiro, but she began capoeira in Belem do Para, in 1970, with Master Bezerra. In 1975, she visited Sao Paulo and met Master Canjiquinha, and went with him to Salvador. After five more years of training she graduated to the level of master.
Master Cigana also holds degrees in physical education, philosophy and education.

Master Damiao

Master Damiao, a desciple of Master Bimba organized the first trips of Master Bimba to Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, for Capoeira Exhibitions. A tireless fighter, he is recognized as one of the most instrumental people in the growth of Capoeira.
As one of the first capoeiristas in Sao Paulo, he taught at the studio of the famous trainer Kid Jofre and in the 70's working with Master Suassuna, he brought Capoeira to the entire Valley of Paraiba where he lives. He is also author of a wonderful book about our art.

Master Decanio

Mestre Decanio, one of the oldest disciples of Mestre Bimba still living today, is widely recognized as the premiere authority on Capoeira Regional of Mestre Bimba. A doctor by profession, he was at Bimba's side since 1938, providing medical care, helping with the administration of the Studio, studying capoeira and establishing rules and techniques for teaching the art.
Mestre Decanio has written several books about Capoeira, combined in the collection Sao Salomao, edited by he himself. His work has been called (by Master Damiao)the "true Bible of Capoeira".

Master Deputado

Master Deputado began Capoeira with Master Osvaldo de Souza, and then later trained with Mestre Bimba. He always been a great promotor of capoeira, throughout Brazil, but primarily in Goias and Mato Grosso. He is the author of various books about capoeira.
Master Deputado's nickname (which means "Congressman") was given to him by Master Bimba, because he always knew so many people and had so many friends. Master Bimba once said, "Only a congressman could know so many people...", and the name stuck.

Master Gato

Master Gato of Rio de Janeiro is both a master of capoeira and has master of the University of Newcastle in England. In the 1960's, together with Master Rafael Flores and Master Preguica, he founded the Senzala Capoeira Group one of the largest groups with in the world. In Newcastle, as a student, he discovered "the English have rhythm and like to fight"; he organized various capoeira rodas on the University. It was such a success that Master Gato ended up creating Senzala Group of Great Britain, a branch of the origional. Since 1990 he has gone England every year to baptise more students.

Master Gato Preto

Master Gato Preto was born in Santo Amaro da Purificacao, on the 19th of March in 1929. He began capoeira at eight years old and lived together with many its greatest proponents, but was never graduated or ranked in the conventional way. "Capoeira never stops", he says. He has always been an excellent capoeirista of incredible agility.
Since 1966, when he participated in the Brazilian delagation for the first International Festival of African Arts, in Dakar(Senegal), he became a traveling embassador of capoeira, having visited many countries passing along his knowledge. He was celebrated in in several works by Jorge Amado.
Master Gato Preto one of the most requested berimbau players in Bahia Um dos mais requisitados tocadores de berimbau de toda a Bahia, Mestre Gato Preto is also one of the most well liked figures in capoeira, thanks in no small part to the strength of his character.

Master Gildo Alfinete

Master Gildo Alfinete was born in 1940, in Salvador, Bahia. He fell in love with capoeira at the age of 13, when used watch the capoeiristas praciting at the old port of Bahia. With the help of hsi friend, Dr. Colmenero, he joined the studio of Master Pastinha, the Capoeira Angola Sports Center (CECA), there he developed a great friendship with Master Pastinha.
Master Gildo Alfinete today holds the prominent position of President of the Brazilian Association of Consul of Masters of Capoeira Angola or ABCA, located in Pelourinho, Salvador. There he is responsible for caring for the ABCA collection at the first Capoeira Anogla Museum in the world. Like Master Gato Preto, in 1966 he also participated in the Brazilian delagation for the first International Festival of African Arts, in Dakar(Senegal). A great master of Capoeira Angola, he receives everyone at the Capoeira Angola Museum with plenty of kindness.

Master Itapoan

Master Itapoan began practicing capoeira in 1964, in Salvador with Mestre Bimba. He is one of the most well respected authorities on Master Bimba and Capoeira Regional in the world, the other primary authority being Mestre Decanio. Master Itapoan is also internationally recognized as a scholar of the traditions and historic figures of capoeira.

Master Jelon Vieira

Master Jelon is one of the most well known and respected masters in the world of capoeira. A pioneer in bringing capoeira to the United States and Europe, he studied Capoeira Angola with Master Bobo and Capoeira Regional with Master Ezequiel, and even spent some time in the studio of Master Bimba. In 1975 he went to New York, bringing with him capoeira, the afro-brazilian dance. In 1977 he founded a the company, Dance Brasil which has made presentations in the United States, Europe and even Africa.
Today, Master Jelon is part of the Capoeira Brasil Group and maintains studios in both New York and Salvador, Bahia. He also supervises a number of his graduated students, who teach throughout the United States.

Master Mao Branca

Master Mao Branca, got his nickname in a street roda in Niteroi, when he showed up wearing a pair of white gloves. He the founder of the group Capoeira Gerais and continues to give back to the community by helping and teaching children on the street and children with Down Syndrome. As Master Mao Branca likes to say, he uses capoeira as a "instrument for good citizenship". By taking children off the street and giving them direction, capoeira gives them a future.

Master Paulinho Sabia

Master Paulinho Sabia is of three founding masters of the Capoeira Brasil Group, one of the largest most widely recognized groups in the world. He maintains a capoeira studio in Niteroi, Brazil.

Master Pele

Master Pele, was born in 1934, and is from the time when capoeira was practiced on weekends and days when there were parties. He learned capoeira on the street, starting at age 12, in a time when it was still marginalized and was just starting to be taught in studios. His teacher was Bugalho, a well known capoeirista and berimbau player.
Master Pele taught for 25 years exclusively in the fifth Battalion of Military Police. He is known for his great singing in the roda, and is part of the Consul of Masters for the Brazilian Association of Capoeira Angola - ABCA.

Mestre Jurandir

Mestre Jurandir has dedicated the last 26 years of his life to the cause and promotion of Capoeira Angola. He was one of the pioneers of the Group of Capoeira Angola Pelourinho (G.C.A.P.), which played a prominent role in the present revival of the art form. In 1990, he started the N'GOLO Angola group in Minas Gerais, Brazil, which is presently affiliated with the International Capoeira Angola Foundation (I.C.A.F.), of which he is the vice-president. Master Jurandir presently travels back and forth between the United States and Brazil to supervise the foundation's projects and events.
Throughout the metropolitan region of Minas Gerais's capitol, Belo Horizonte, Mestre Jurandir has organized various events with the objective of promoting Capoeira Angola, including movement and music workshops for children at the Minas Gerais Public Library; participation in a national campaign combating AIDS, and various public demonstrations of the art form. Such as one at the Festival of Black Art (F.A.N.). He has also given multiple seminars on the important of Capoeira Angola with respect to Afro-Brazilian culture and history, as well as the strength of the art form as a pedagogical tool.
Mestre Jurandir has also conducted various workshop at college campuses throughout the United States as part of the F.I.C.A.'s international cultural exchange program, at George Washington University, Howard University, The University of the District of Columbia (U.D.C.), Evergreen State College, as well as Concord University in Canada. He has also given workshops to people interested in Capoeira in Austin, TX, Okland, CA, Philadelphia, PA, Seattle, WA, Portland, WA, Washington, DC, Atlanta, GA and Montreal Canada. In August of 1997 he helped organize and participated in F.I.C.A.'s third International Capoeira Angola Encounter, taking place in both the cities of Salvador and Belo Horizonte in Brazil.
One of Mestre Jurandir's principle preoccupations has long been the promotion and teaching of Capoeira Angola to children. Through the art form, he seeks to instill in such children not only the mental and physical discipline to perform the complex movements of the game, but also an understanding of the music accompanying the art form and the cultural and historical significance of its lyrics. The art form is uniquely suited to stimulate neuro-muscular control, self-confidence, and interactive social skills in children through play. At the same time, Capoeira Angola teaches children to respect the art form's rich African heritage, conveyed through both singing and during the game and stories told afterwards about the art form's legendary past.
With this goal in mind, Mestre Jurandir's group began working with the Nucleus of Pedagogic support (N.A.P.) in the municipality of Belo Horizontes's Miguilin Project to support and educate abandoned children in 1996. The same year, he also started a project with differently abled children at the Municipal School for Exceptional Children. In 1997, the group became a co-participant in the 'Children in the Park' project for underprivileged children of the impoverished community surrounding the Mangabeira Park in Belo Horizonte, M.G. Brazil.

Paulo Aires

"Contra-Mestre Gulliver" was born in Rio Grande do Sul. Paulo Aires is a Contra-Mestre Artist of Capoeira who has been training in the art for over twenty years. He has been involved in Capoeira events and performance throughout the U.S. and Brazil. He is currently teaching adults and children in New York City and Conneticut. He has been teaching Capoiera to adults and children for the past ten years and is certified by Grand Master Nф of Groupo Capoeira Angola Palmares to teach Capoeira throught the world. He moved to New York over a year ago in order to promote and make accesible the teachings and traditions of the art of Capoira Angola Palmares to children, adolesants, the elderly, as well as individuals with disabilities or handicaps. He promotes his art through working with cultural, community, and social centers, as well as teaching in dance and movement spaces.
